Blended Learning: Zearn

Zearn is a non-profit - which is free for teachers and students (paid components: student workbook, but this can be printed for "free"). It is closely tied to Eureka math. It is Independent Digital Lessons for K-5 grades. Kinder is more likely to be successful as a station supplement, whereas at grades 1-5 it is designed to be used a part of the core daily math block.

Independent Digital Lesson Components

Teachers get alerts if students become stuck on Tower of Power. This makes a great data resource to pull small guided math groups around.

Teachers are Superheros with a Powerful Superpower

The second day of #iDC2016 (technology conference within D.C. Public Schools) started off well with the keynote speaker Dr. Kecia Ray, with the Center for Digital Education. Dr. Ray highlighted what education should look like today. Her message indicated that there are no negatives with personalized learning and only positives. She emphasized that technology is changing the landscape of teaching.

She shared the video from Dateline NBC that highlights the changes with technology from the "olden days" to the present. Students have access to much different technologies today than were available not even that long ago.

When is 1:1 appropriate?

Devices can be important for student engagement, creativity, and personalized learning. However, students need to be developmentally ready to engage with technology in a meaningful and productive way. With many districts looking to adopt a 1-to-1 device model as resources are reallotted, at what grade do you think this program should be introduced?

myOn Reader is an on-line digital library from Capstone books. Our students have access to over 1700 books online anytime, anywhere! These books are in full color and the students may choose to have them read to them or read them alone. These books come in Spanish and English. Think of utilizing this resource as a center, home connection or whole class read alouds.

All teachers and students have access to this resource with individual accounts linked to the classroom teacher. Please check out the myOn folder for more info on how to login and get started with your students. (This info lives in the Drive > Whole School > Technology).

Imagine Learning - Resources for all Teachers

Imagine Learning can be a great resource for any teacher. All of the 5,000+ lessons are accessible to any teacher with an account, if the school has licenses for students. I have already created accounts for the kindergarten teachers, please let me know if you would also like to utilize this tool with your students.

You can use the Imagine Learning lessons whole class or with a small group. Using it with the Smartboard would help to increase student engagement.
